Midwife on trial for UK circumcision death

A UK midwife has been charged with manslaughter after a baby bled to death following a circumcision.
According to online reports in The Manchester Evening News an Oldham Chronicle Grace Adeleye (66) was charged on Friday with the manslaughter of Goodluck Caubergs by gross negligence.
The court heard the incident happened in Oldham on April 17 2010.
It is not uncommon for medically unnecessary religious circumcisions to be performed in community settings in the UK. These are often performed without anaesthetic by non-medical pratitioners and can lead to complications and in the worse cases death.
According to a 2010 report in The Guardian on male circumcision, 40% of circumcisions performed on boys at an Islamic school in Oxford led to medical problems with 1 in 5 being treated in hospital as a result.
It's difficult to say how many boys in the UK die as a result of medically unnecessary male circumcision as the connection to circumcision is not always recorded  - as this male circumcision article by campaigner Laura McDonald explains
Whatever our different opinions on this issue, everyone in the country can agree that we should do all we can to prevent the unnecessary death and physical damage of boys through Unnecessary Male Circumcision.
The question of how we Prevent Unnecessary Male Circumcision will be the subject of a 1 day mini conference in Keele in July 2012. Click for details of UK 2012 Male Circumcision Conference.
